Visit the biggest factory of Siemens in Hispanic American

Organized by:
The visit was organized by the professor and postdoctoral assistant of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Universidad de Los Andes, David Celeita, with the collaboration of other graduates of Universidad de Los Andes, Juan Camilo Mecón and the engineer Wilson Castañeda. The experience was enriched with the participation of other graduates and members of the IEEE SBIAS Chapter.

Date: February 28 of 2020

The number of participants: The number of assistants at the visit were 14 students of the Power Systems Workshop course and 11 members of the Industry Applications Society (IAS) student chapter, belonging to the IEEE branch of Universidad de Los Andes, who had the opportunity to participate in a visit to the medium and high voltage cell factory of Siemens, one of the largest plants in Latin America.
Activities:

Students who attended the visit had access to the entire cell production line, where they had the opportunity to receive specific explanations from the project team and senior engineers in high voltage solutions design. This activity made students familiar with the different aspects of power system design, Switchgear, protection, and control, under an entirely professional environment. At the end of the two-hour tour of the plant, it was possible to know the manufacture of E-houses, an innovative, cost-efficient and modular concept for the customization of mobile substations, especially in the Oil & Gas sector.

The day culminated with the socialization of different questions by students with the team of Siemens engineers and graduates, who are currently in charge of various high-impact projects in the region.

Recycling Day

Organized by: The student chapter branch from the Universities. We organize a recycling day in the ML building of Universidad de Los Andes. The principal reason for this was to combat climate change and realize a campaign for recycling.

Date: March 20 of 2019.

The number of participants: The number of members of the IEEE SBIAS Chapter that realize this activity was nine students.

Activities:

The first part consists in the form of two groups. The first group has the function of separate bootless plastic, cartoon and organic trash. The second group must make the wash of the bootless a separate the ticket and the cap. The results of their initiative were generated knowledge about recycling and three bags classify of trash.

Controls DC in bipolar microgrids of 24 V/12 V

Organized by: The students from IEEE SBIAS Chapter of Universidad de Los Andes. We organize an interesting conference for the university community, related to power electronics in microgrids. This conference was given by Taha Madi Ph.D.

Date: September 4 of 2019.

The number of participants: The number of members of the IEEE SBIAS Chapter that realize this activity was three and the students that assist to this conference was twenty-two

Activity:

Professor Gustavo Ramos that was the advisor of the chapter and the student chair contacted the Postdoctoral researcher Taha Madi for a conference about DC bipolar microgrids. After the acceptance of the researcher Taha, we accord the date and realize the promotion for this conference, that was divided into six parts:

  1. Introduction to microgrids.
  2. Type of microgrids (Monopolar and Bipolar).
  3. Controls Monopolar Microgrids 12/24 V.
  4. Controls Bipolar Microgrids 12/24 V.
  5. Experiments of prototypes.
  6. Conclusion and recommendations.

The students congratulated at the researcher Taha Madi for this important investigation and interesting models of converters used in microgrids

Conference of SEL relays and his operation

Organized by: The students from the IEEE SBIAS Chapter of Universidad de Los Andes. SEL Laboratories and the IEEE SBIAS Chapter associate for realizing a conference in the classmate of “Fault analysis and protection systems”.

Date: September 4 of 2019.

The number of participants: The number of students that participate in the class of “Failure analysis and protection systems” that was Eighteen and nine members of the IEEE SBIAS Chapter of Universidad de Los Andes

Activity:

The engineers Sergio Camargo and Milton Alcos of SEL company made a complement in the class “Fault analysis and protection systems”. They treated topics relatives with the history of SEL and operation of relays SEL (Detailed information about signal processing and algorithm ANSI function) and models of relays. In the last stage, they made a workshop with Syncrowave Software (Extract .cfg files of relays for reading and analysis in this software). On the other hand, they complemented with a solid demonstration for the arc detection in the SEL-751
